The Lovereading4Kids comment
Selected by a distinguished independent panel of experts including our editorial expert, Julia Eccleshare, for Diverse Voices - 50 of the best Children's Books celebrating cultural diversity in the UK. Donovan Croft is sent to be fostered by Keith Chapman's family when Donovan's mother has to return to the West Indies, but the trauma of leaving his parents is too much for Donovan and he becomes mute.
The Good Book Guide Review. The trouble with Donovan Croft - when he has to be fostered and goes to a new school because his mother has gone to Jamaica for a while - is that he is too miserable to speak. This sad yet often very funny book shows how school and foster home cope with the problem - and what happens to solve it.
The Trouble with Donovan Croft by Bernard Ashley
When Keith gets a new foster brother, he's not too happy about it. But when this boy won't talk to him, Keith realizes that things are going to be much harder than he originally thought. And it's not just Keith who Donovan won't speak to - he won't speak to anybody at all. The other kids at school take Donovan's silence to be a sign of a bad attitude and start to bully him. Keith knows he has to stick up for him, but that means the bullies are just going to pick on him too ...
A remarkable book, sympathetic yet unsentimental Children's Book Review
