Is there a mum anywhere who hasn’t said that watching too much television gives you square eyes? That beds don’t make themselves? That fish makes you smart? I doubt it. Looked at from a child’s perspective and you suddenly see how strange these things sound. The book takes a different ‘silly’ saying for each page and it not only makes for a fun exploration of language, but also proves an unusual way of highlighting the special relationship between mother and child. Despite the silliness, this is a tender and affectionate story. The very best saying is saved for the final spread, ‘when she tucks me in my mum says that she loves me all the way to the stars and back’. ~Andrea Reece
