The Lovereading4Kids comment

The first in a collection of stories for young children in which the resourceful and kind Polly outwits the enthusiastic but dim wolf over a number of encounters which are close enough to be alarming while funny enough to be reassuringly safe.~ Julia Eccleshare

The Good Book Guide logo The Good Book Guide Review. Immensely enjoyable, witty stories in which the bumbling old wolf is forever trying to outwit Polly - but Polly (with the reader) is one step ahead.

Synopsis

Clever Polly and the Stupid Wolf by Catherine Storr

This book includes twelve stories written for the author's daughter, who was scared of the wolf under the bed! Drawing occasionally on well-known fairy tales, and skillfully blending fantasy and reality, these stories are bursting with humour, originality and charm. And Polly, not scared at all, outwits the wolf on each and every occasion!

Reviews

All the wolf wants to do is eat a little girl, but he has chosen one very clever girl, and he is unfortunately one very stupid wolf! A charming, classic tale. Waterstones Guide for Kids Books

About the Author

Catherine Storr (1913-2001) was an English children's writer, best known for her novel Marianne Dreams and for the Clever Polly series. She was born in London, and attended St Paul's Girls' School, and went on to study English literature at Newnham College, Cambridge. She tried unsuccessfully to become a novelist but without giving up this ambition she studied medicine, qualifying as a doctor in 1944. She worked at the Middlesex Hospital. Afterwards, while regularly producing new children's books, she also worked as an editorial assistant for Penguin Books, from 1966 to the early seventies. She married in 1942 and had had three daughters. She divorced in 1970 and remarried the economist Lord Balogh (1905-1985).
