The Lovereading4Kids comment

A Piece of Passion from editor, Boxer Books The idea of owls and the dark, dark night has always been a magical one. Owls are known for being wise and watchful and there is something immediately peaceful and comforting about them, so when this text came in to Boxer it had immediate appeal. Not only did it have a gorgeous central owl character but it branched out (excuse the pun) to include the town, the country, those within the house and life that goes on around it. We loved the play on words, too – the noise the owl makes, Twit Twoo, often can sound like Twit-to-Who? And it was an ideal way to explore the night-time world. Sebastien Braun’s stunning watercolour illustrations really brought the text to life. It felt like the perfect combination.

A little owl says good night in his own special way to creatures and places at bedtime.

About the Author

Smriti Prasadam-Halls

Smriti Prasadam-Halls was first an editor in children’s books before turning her hand to writing. Her favourite place to write is actually in bed. This is possibly because she has slept in many weird and wonderful places: a tent in the rainforests of Borneo; a sleeper train jolting across India; a choppy ferry heading for Shetland; a lighthouse on the Mediterranean, a junk in the Hong Kong harbour and a Maharaja’s palace in the middle of a lake, to name but a few! She now lives in London with her family.

A Q&A with Smriti

What do you like best about being an author? Being able to go to work in my pyjamas.

Where is your favourite place to work? Richmond Library or at home, somewhere cosy.

What three things do you need every day before you pick up a pen / pencil? A comfortable spot. Absolute quiet. Coffee.

What are your five favourite things in the whole world? Try as I might I couldn't pick five, so here are seven, in no particular order: Iced buns with a cherry on the top. Listening to the same song over and over because I love it so much. Deer in the park. London at night. VERY spicy South Indian chicken curry. Staying up all night to finish a book. Adventures with my boys.

What are your hobbies? Cooking, reading, playing a collection of instruments (badly), film, theatre, Guardian crosswords, reading a bit more.

Have you any pets? To my children's perpetual misery, no. We kept five hives of bees when I was a child... but I'm not sure that counts.

Have you ever held an owl? Not yet, but I'd love to.

If you were the owl in this book, where would be your favourite place to roost? I'd roost in the tree right outside the children's bedroom, of course.

What was your favourite thing about the night when you were a child? Night time was – and still is – magical, mysterious and beautiful in a tingly, exciting way.
