The Big Green Book by Robert Graves

The Lovereading4Kids comment

An enchanting, strange and sometimes chilling tale, masterfully illustrated by Maurice Sendak.

The Big Green Book by Robert Graves

The little boy Jack discovers a big green book of magic in the attic, and learns all sorts of spells - spells to change the look of things, spells to make him old and grey, or disappear entirely! Of course I can't tell you how all these things were done, because this was a long time ago and the big green book has now disappeared. But if you want to read about what Jack did with his new magic powers, and how his poor old aunt and uncle were quite bewildered, then take a look inside...

'Fantasy value here for power-hungry young imaginations. Maurice Sendak's delightful pictures add a winning note of gaiety' Kirkus Review

In 1970 he was the first American to win the Hans Christian Andersen Illustrator's Medal. He passed away in May 2012. Robert Graves was born in 1895 in Wimbledon, son of Alfred Perceval Graves, the Irish writer, and Amalia von Ranke. He went from school to the First World War, where he became a captain in the Royal Welsh Fusiliers. He wrote his autobiography, GOODBYE TO ALL THAT, in 1929. He translated Apuleius, Lucan, and Suetonius for the Penguin classics, and compiled the first modern dictionary of Greek mythology, THE GREEK MYTHS. He was elected Professor of Poetry at Oxford in 1961, and became an Honorary Fellow of St John's College, Oxford, in 1971. He published a new edition of his COLLECTED POEMS in 1975. Robert Graves died in December 1985 in Majorca, his home since 1929.
