The Lovereading4Kids comment
‘The Secret of Skara Vhore’ is an adventurous fantasy quest, where a tantalising waft of folklore skims the pages. 13 year old Katie has always been alone, has always been different, but when she discovers long lost family members on a remote Scottish island, she starts to discover who she really is. Friendships are formed and tested, as an old and terrifying force battles to overthrow everything that is good in the world. This is the first in a trilogy, yet Jennifer M Calder ensures this is a properly fashioned and finished story in its own right, she doesn’t just introduce the characters, you really feel that you get to know them. The short chapters keep your interest, the story just sings along, plus the chills and challenges ensure this is an enjoyably stimulating read. ~ Liz Robinson
A Note from the Author - The idea of an island story had been with me for a long time. The setting had to be the Scottish highlands that I have known all my life. For me, I have always found it a dramatic landscape, its legend, folklore and mystery, so inspiring. I wanted the story to be not only an adventurous quest but also a story of hope – especially for my main character. Katie is a distrustful and deeply unhappy teenager because of traumatic circumstances in her childhood. As a teacher I met a lot of troubled children who I hoped would win through to peaceful and fulfilling futures and at least in fiction I could make it happen for Katie.
The Secret of Skara Vhore by Jennifer M. Calder
Katie is a lost and troubled teenager who is claimed by distant, unknown relatives and is dispatched to a remote Scottish island. Distrustful of the world, she slowly accepts the friendship of perceptive Morag, mischievous Robbie and the reticent Kirig, a strange boy who lives in the hills. But sinister and ghostly events threaten them as past time spills into the present. Katie bravely struggles to uncover her forgotten history but then is asked to risk the lives of those she loves in order to battle against the forces of chaos and fulfil her destiny.
