The Lovereading4Kids comment

Of all fairy tales, the story of Little Red Hood is the one that seems to speak most directly to today’s audience, and to lend itself most readily to modern reinvention. It’s give an extraordinarily fresh and stylish treatment by Bethan Woollvin in her debut book. She strips the story down to basics, with a short text and boldly minimal illustrations, in black, red and grey. At one point readers see right into the wolf’s head, his plans for Little Red Riding Hood and her granny told in just one image. Everyone s of course knows the ending and it’s absolutely clear in this version that the wolf has no hope of getting the better of this particular little girl. Stylish fun that puts new life into an old, old story. ~ Andrea Reece

Little Red by Bethan Woollvin

A striking new interpretation of the beloved Little Red Riding Hood story - with a dark and witty twist. Little Red Riding Hood meets a wolf on her way through the woods to visit her sick grandmother. The wolf is hungry, and Red Riding Hood looks tasty, so he hatches a dastardly plan, gobbles up Grandma and lies in wait. So far, so familiar. But this Little Red Riding Hood is not easily fooled, and this big bad wolf better watch his back. In this defiant interpretation of the traditional tale, the cheeky, brave little girl seizes control of her own story (and the wolf gets rather more than he bargained for).

The perfect gift for fans of darker fairy tales. Printed using rich pantone colours, the graphic illustrations in Little Red offer a uniquely bold, visually arresting interpretation of the classic story by Bethan Woollvin, the winner of The Macmillan Prize for Illustration 2014.

Bethan Woollvin's version [of Little Red Riding Hood] has a far darker ending - and I loved it. The talented illustrator and writer has taken a childhood niggle as her premise for this bold feminist version of the story: would our caped heroine really have been taken in by a wolf in a bad grandma disguise? ... I won't spoil the ending but let's just say Little Red wraps it up nicely (and warmly) and it has my three year old son thrilled at every read, begging for more. The Times A talent to watch Daily Mail This is my book of the year so far ... Woollvin is a striking new talent with strong retro style illustrations and a simple, witty text. Angels & Urchins A unique interpretation of the classic fairytale, shot through with dark humour and a stunning, bold graphic style. This brave girl not only defeats her foe, she wears the wolfskin home too. The Bookseller A joy to read ... An impressive debut picture book from an exciting new talent. BookTrust Its strong lines and bold colours are excitingly modern New Statesman
