The Lovereading4Kids comment

‘To the best of my knowledge’, announces Timmy Failure at the start of this book, in a chapter called Let’s Do the Timmy Warp Again, ‘everyone on earth has now read the prior three volumes about my life.’ That’s one of the things about Timmy: he’s very confident. He certainly believes he’s a clever detective and, with his associate Total the polar bear, sets out to solve a case of missing money in this new adventure. Timmy’s sleuthing, and views on the world around him, are as funny as ever. Stephan Pastis’s stories are full of quirky humour and Timmy is an irresistible central character. There’s stuff going on with his long-suffering mum in this story too, and their relationship is another one of the pleasures of the books. ~ Andrea Reece

About the Author

Stephan Pastis

Stephan Pastis is the creator of Pearls Before Swine, an acclaimed comic strip that appears in more than six hundred newspapers and boasts a devoted following. His 2011 compilation Larry in Wonderland debuted at No. 1 on the New York Times bestseller list for paperback graphic novels. Timmy Failure was his first novel for young readers. He lives in northern California.

Where did the idea for Timmy Failure originate?
I wanted to create a character with a big blind spot. And Timmy’s is enormous. He is not
good at anything he does, and yet he thinks he’s the centre of the universe. I like working with characters like that. I think I made him a detective because in kids’ books, the boy detective is always so smart and clever. I wanted to turn that on its head.

Who is your favourite supporting character in the book?
Corrina Corrina. I like the fact that she’s the protagonist’s enemy but that she doesn’t even know that the protagonist is alive. Timmy’s just not a part of her everyday life. On the other hand, he is completely consumed with her.

What’s next for Timmy and Total?
Timmy will continue to try to conquer the universe. And he will fall short. And he will
blame it all on his polar bear.

“Timmy is a detective who cantake any mystery and make it more mysterious.”
