The Lovereading4Kids comment

As much a game as a teaching tool, Usborne’s Listen and Learn books are an ingenious and entertaining way for children to start learning a language. Here children can choose one of four double-sided cards featuring topics such as animals, food or ‘me’, slot it into a frame and then push the pictures to hear the words spoken in Mandarin – it’s simple, effective and lots of fun too. The words are written under each picture in English, in the Chinese characters and also spelled phonetically. A really useful item that will encourage an early love of languages. ~ Andrea Reece

Listen and Learn First Chinese Words by Sam Taplin, Mairi Mackinnon

This looks like a book but it's actually a clever sound panel that allows children to hear 128 Chinese words spoken by a native speaker. Simply take one of the 4 cards (each features 16 words and pictures on each side) out of the envelope and insert into the slot as instructed. Press 'go' and then press a picture to hear how the word is pronounced.
