Funny and playful this book will appeal to children’s sense of the absurd and to their delight in mess. A green shape sits centre page opposite a pair of cartoon eyes; what happens when you turn the page? ‘Splat!’ The eyes, now slightly wonky, are smack in the middle of the shape. Now there’s a custard pie on the opposite page – turn over and with another satisfying ‘Splat!’ the eyes are staring out from a blobby, custardy mess. As the book continues there are more opportunities for squidgy mash ups until the final spread swamps everything in ice cream. It’s silly and surprising, riotously lurid, and plays archly with conceptual ideas of the book. Fun for adults and children alike. ~ Andrea Reece
