The Lovereading4Kids comment

In a nutshell: jungle survival in the footsteps of Mowgli | More than 120 years after publication of The Jungle Book, and following the new live action film version, Bear Gryll’s adventure story sends a modern boy alone into the Indian jungle. Mak seems an unlikely survival hero: we know he’s not the jungle type and is bullied at school. But he’s adopted by a female wolf and quickly learns to accept the jungle, not fight it. Like Mowgli, he forms friendships with a bear and panther, and is attacked by a pack of vicious monkeys but comes up against poachers too. It’s thrilling stuff, and extra details only Grylls can provide, e.g. that termites have a citrus tang when you crunch them (it’s the formic acid) give it a very authentic feel. There are more adventures for Mak promised, good news for readers.

Josh Lacey writes excellent page-turning boys’ own adventures and Steve Backshall’s books are also full of excitement. ~ Andrea Reece

Synopsis

Spirit of the Jungle by Bear Grylls

From real-life adventurer, Bear Grylls, Spirit of the Jungle is an exciting contemporary action-adventure inspired by Rudyard Kipling's classic, The Jungle Book. Could you survive in the jungle? After being washed away down the Wainganga River during a flash flood, Mak wakes up alone in the Indian jungle. The jungle is full of danger - poisonous snakes, cunning monkeys and desperate poachers - and every step Mak takes might be his last. Mak finds help and friendship from other jungle creatures, but he will need all his skill and luck to survive and make his way back home.

Venetia Gosling, Macmillan Children's Books says: “We are relishing exploring our archive and with the 150th anniversary of Rudyard Kipling’s birth we felt this was the opportunity to do something different with the Macmillan Jungle Book, bringing it to a new generation. Bear Grylls is a fantastic advocate for independence and adventure, and this is the perfect combination of his profile and interests with our fantastic publishing heritage.”

Bear Grylls says: “The Jungle Book is one of the great timeless classics and I am so proud to be re-invigorating this for a modern young readership who are new to the tale – brace yourselves for the ultimate action-packed adventure that will both inspire and stay with young readers as they grow up!”
