Birgitta Sif’s beautifully illustrated story of two little mice is as touching and realistic a depiction of sibling relationships as you are likely to find. It follows Swish through her day, from the purple shades of early morning through rosy sunshine and back to the deep hues of night. The day is marked more by sounds than colour however, and Swish’s little sister Squeak is a noisy presence, stomping down the stairs for breakfast, singing in the library. For all her confidence though, Squeak needs her sister’s reassurance at nightime and the two go to sleep holding hands. Perfectly told, full of scenes familiar to the very young, this creates a real sense of sisterly love. ~ Andrea Reece

Swish and Squeak's Noisy Day by Birgitta Sif

Travel through the day of one big sister mouse and her noisy little sibling. From the swishy sound of teeth being brushed to the chomping of cereal and the stomping of feet on the way to school, this big sister can hear a lot. Luckily after school their eyes might not be able to find each other, but their ears can. An imaginative adventure through a world of sounds that are often not what they seem, this is a story that will have every reader thinking about what their ears hear.

Birgitta Sif was born in Reykjavik, Iceland. She received her BEA from Cornell University and her masters from the Cambridge School of Art. She is the author and illustrator of Oliver, shortlisted for the Kate Greenaway Medal. Birgitta’s feet have now taken her to Cambridge, where she lives with her family. Follow her on Instagram here.
