For anyone who loves ‘The Beautiful Game’ and who has ever dreamed of playing in an F.A. Cup Final then this is the perfect book. Even Stevens F.C. are a non-league side from Hackney who by extraordinary circumstances end up having a run in the F.A. Cup. The story follows 9-year-old Wayne Travis who perfects the special ‘triple bounce shot’ to help his side progress against much superior opposition. This book is great fun, full of charming pictures and is ideal for getting young boys into reading.

Even Stevens F.C. by Michael Rosen

Wayne Travis just loves football. His team plays every Saturday morning on the Astroturf behind the local supermarket. Anyone in the community who wants to play can join the team, so there are young and old, male and female, competent and less than competent – the important thing is to have fun! But when the team gets drawn in the first round of the F.A. Cup, it get serious and they have to pull together to meet the challenge.

Wayne Travis and his father Rodney are football crazy but when Rodney's bad knee stops him playing one week, young Wayne steps up to the mark and the team go on to claim victory after victory. Could this oddball team have what it takes to make it to the cup final? Junior Newly confident readers will welcome the reissue of Michael Rosen's comical story about a hotchpotch local team that - more by luck than judgment - ends up playing in the FA Cup final. The ups and downs of everyday life in multiracial Hackney, London, are deftly interwoven into the stuff of football fantasies, with plenty of jokes along the way. Full colour illustrations and a narrative told partly in speech bubbles make this lively book particularly successful with older, reluctant readers. Guardian The hilarious story of how Even Stevens FC gets through to the FA Cup final. With full colour illustrations an d fast-paced, laugh-out-loud text - complete with speech bubbles and news reports - this really is a winner. Junior Education
