Julia Eccleshare's comment:
Everything about this deliciously improbable adventure is almost completely daft – and that’s the fun of it all. When Charlie sets up his walkie-talkie in the staff room he doesn’t hear gossip about the pupils as he had expected. Instead, he finds the teachers are speaking in a foreign language that no one has ever heard of. Charlie is kidnapped trying to find out more and when Jim sets out to find him – his sister ‘borrows’ a motorbike and driving him up to Skye - he too is caught up in the disturbing rituals of an unusual group. Jim tells the madcap story which also includes a wry and light-hearted view of family life.

Synopsis
Boom! by Mark HaddonFrom the moment that Jim and his best friend Charlie bug the staffroom and overhear two of their teachers speaking to each other in a secret language, they know there's an adventure on its way. But what does 'spudvetch' mean, and why do Mr Kidd's eyes flicker with fluorescent blue light when Charlie says it to him?
Reviews
A funny, pacy adventure that blends a fairly kitchen sink set of family dynamics with some utterly zany fantasy. The whole thing is a pleasure to read and I think probably a pleasure to share reading aloud. There is a big whiff of Roald Dahl anarchy about it, especially in the way the adults are awfully bad or bumblingly hopeless. The children save the day just as children should. A crackling little story. The Bookbag.co.uk 20090812 An explosive adventure. Bookseller, Children's Buyer's Guide 20090101 A hilarious adventure by Mark Haddon, who has an innate and dazzling rapport with his target audience. The Bookseller 20090619About The Author
