The Lovereading4Kids comment

Loveable Winnie the Witch is back for a new adventure and, as ever, things do not go according to plan! The flying carpet that Winnie has been given by her sisters just doesn’t seem to work. Every time Winnie tries it some disaster happens. Winnie and her cat Wilbur endure a nightmare flying adventure before finding a really good – and safe - use for the carpet. Wonderfully fully imagined illustrations capture the details of this thoroughly modern witch’s life. This edition comes complete with a reading of the book on CD. The book is also available separately as a paperback. Synopsis

Winnie's Flying Carpet (Book & CD) by Valerie Thomas

Winnie's sisters have given her a flying carpet but Winnie is struggling to find something nice to say about it in her thank-you letter as the carpet has been more than a little wayward. Winnie decides to give the carpet one last chance but then disaster strikes. The carpet swoops off with poor Wilbur as its unwilling passenger.

This story is full of noisy antics: a collision with a rubbish truck, a splash-down into a pond, and a sequence of exciting rides at the funfair are just some of the wonderful sound-effect additions to the narration of Winnie's Flying Carpet on the accompanying audio CD.

Reviews

Paul's artwork is as dynamic and arresting as ever. His comic touch is perfectly judged, stretching the simple story within reach of a wide age group. The Guardian, Amazing Stories Supplement [Praise for Winnie's Midnight Dragon]: 'Thomas's story is as deliciously fresh and funny as ever, the perfect foil to the drawings.

About the Author

Valerie Thomas

Valerie Thomas was born in Melbourne, Australia, and has lived there for most of her life, apart from six years spent in Europe, where she worked in England, France and Norway. She is a teacher, and has taught in primary, secondary, and special schools in Australia and England as well as lecturing in English Teaching Method in a Teachers’ College in Melbourne.

For many years she worked as an educational researcher and curriculum consultant in the area of spelling, and has written extensively on the subject. Her other main interest is travel. She has travelled to most corners of the world, and has written about her travels: the first piece of writing she had published was an account of her experience picking grapes for the champagne harvest in France.

In 1987 her phenomenally successful children’s book Winnie the Witch, illustrated by Korky Paul, was published by Oxford University Press and won the Children’s Book of the Year Award. It has since been translated into many languages around the world, and also been adapted for CD-ROM. Since then Valerie has written another eleven fabulous Winnie adventures.
