Julia Eccleshare's comment:

Shortlisted for the Waterstone's Book Award 2010

Brilliant and convincing, this is a deeply moving story which saves the reader from absolute heartbreak because of its warmth, understanding and hope. Utterly gripping, the story of how Aubrey grieves following the catastrophe that befalls her family and especially the loss of her mother unfolds carefully and without sensationalism. Shored up by the intelligent love of her grandmother, Aubrey begins to find others who can help her too and so, despite the enormous struggle of what it involves, begins her journey of recovery.

Synopsis

Love, Aubrey by Suzanne Lafleur

Something terrible has happened. Eleven-year-old Aubrey is on her own. She's determined to hide away and take care of herself, because facing the truth is too much to bear. But with the love of her grandmother and the letters she writes, can Aubrey begin to see that even though she's lost everything - all is not lost?

About The Author

Suzanne Lafleur

Suzanne LaFleur was born just outside of Boston, Massachusetts in 1983. As she grew, she enjoyed many of the things that you might enjoy—swimming, eating pizza with her parents on Fridays, watching Saturday morning cartoons, riding her bike, listening to stories—but sometimes Suzanne liked to do things that didn’t make much sense to other people. One of those things was to write scribbles (she didn’t know how to write letters or words yet) on paper, roll the paper up into a scroll, and then unroll it to read her stories out loud to anyone who would listen.

In college, Suzanne focused on getting ready to be an author. Her love of stories and writing led her to a double-major in English and European History at Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. She studied everything from the origin of language to creative writing to fantasy stories, and in the end received her degree with honors for a young-adult speculative novel called The Story of Green.

Suzanne still enjoys Manhattan, where she works at The Anderson School, a New York City Public School for gifted children. She spends her summers near Boston, reading stories and teaching swimming at Tenacre Day Camp. Although she has given up bike riding, Suzanne still likes swimming, pizza, cartoons, and listening to, making up, and sharing stories.
