Julia Eccleshare's comment:

What would happen if someone really lost their head? This hilarious and surreal fable tells how one family patches things up and puts them back together again when their father loses his head.

Having searched high and low for the missing head but without any success, the family make daddy a nice new one. He can still do loads of the things he has always done and there are some advantages. The new daddy doesn’t snore and he doesn’t shout because he can’t see the stupid things the children are doing. And he can be tricked into unusually generous shopping.

But in the end none of the good things are enough. Luckily, daddy gets his own head back... Coupled with some absolutely superb illustrations from the pen of Quentin Blake, this book can’t fail to inspire children everywhere.

The Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award rewards the best in contemporary children's and young adult literature from all over the world. Quentin Blake was shortlisted for the 2010 award.

Synopsis

Daddy Lost his Head by Andre Bouchard & Quentin Blake

What would you do if your daddy lost his head? Make him a new one of course! All you need is some old newspapers, paint and a potato for his nose. It turns out there are lots of advantages to having a dad with no head: he doesn't shout or snore, he always agrees with you, and he loves doing the hoovering. But will Daddy ever find his real head?

Reviews

Daddy Lost His Head is a surreal joke, wittily illustrated by Quentin Blake. Andre Bouchard's tale (is a) funny and poignant fable about how a small child might react to a father losing his head in a sense sadly all too familiar to divorced parents.

About The Author

André Bouchard works as a humorous cartoonist for major French newsmagazines. He has also written and illustrated several successful books for children.

As a token of his admiration for Quentin Blake's talent, he wrote Daddy Lost His Head and asked him to illustrate it, which Mr Blake kindly accepted.

Quentin Blake was born in 1932 and has been drawing ever since he can remember. His first drawing was published in Punch when he was only 16. He studied English at Downing College, Cambridge, and after that he did a postgraduate teaching diploma at the University of London. This was followed by a part-time course at Chelsea Art School.

Quentin has received many awards for his books including the Kate Greenaway Medal, the Children's Book Award, the Emil/Kurt Maschler Award, the Bologna Regazzi Prize and the 2002 Hans Christian Andersen Award for Illustration, which is the highest international recognition given to creators of children's books.

He is also famous for illustrating books for other authors, including Joan Aiken, Michael Rosen and Russell Hoban. But he is most famous for the illustrations he did for Roald Dahl's books.

Quentin Blake was awarded the O.B.E. in 1988, and in 1999 he was appointed the first Children's Laureate. This position, which he held for two years, saw him undertaking lots of ambitious projects in his quest to spread the word about the exciting world of children's books.
