The Lovereading comment:

A lovely story set in Scotland.  When Gregor is given a set of bagpipes he’s desperate to play them but he’s constantly told ‘you can’t play here’.  His parents tell him to go outside, so he goes off into the countryside but is told by the fishermen that he’s frightening the fish, by the farmer that he’s disturbing the animals and then when he goes high up the mountain to play he’s chased off by a pair of golden eagles.  Downtrodden and sad he falls upon a lovely house with beautiful gardens and he begins to play there.  Gregor is welcomed with open arms to play his pipes by someone he recognises but doesn’t quite know who? Until that is, a few months later he’s invited to lead the bagpipes through Edinburgh.  You’ll have to get the book to find out Gregor’s surprise! You’re in for a treat.

Synopsis

Picture Kelpies: You Can't Play Here! by Angus Corby

Young Gregor MacDonald is thrilled when he gets a set of bagpipes for his birthday. Now he can be just like Grandad. But each time he starts to play, an awful noise sounds, Honk-eeyyoww! And each time, he hears the same angry cry, 'You can't play here!' Poor Gregor goes from house, to loch, to barn and to hillside disturbing people, until he finds acceptance in the most unlikely of places.

Reviews

'A lovely book with true Scottish flair that will be appreciated by both parents and children (especially parents who have had the joys of having a child in the beginning stages of learning an instrument).'
Armadillo
'... an amusing story, just packed with the beauty and wilderness of Scotland, the illustrations in soft watercolour enhancing each event as we follow Gregor. This book should do especially well across the border, but will touch the heart of anyone who loves Scotland.'
