A World Book Day 'Recommended Read' for 2011.

Graham Baker-Smith’s debut Leon and the Place Between was shortlisted for the prestigious Greenaway Medal in 2010. Farther is the first book that he’s written and illustrated himself and it’s utterly captivating.  The text is so beautifully placed and inextricably linked into the illustration on every page that you’re drawn through the book at breakneck speed but then you’ll immediately want to go back, spend time on every page and in order to delve deeper into the story of a father and a son and a dream of flying.  Graham’s clever use of photographs, collage and illustration make his style completely original and unique.  This is a picture book to treasure and will be enjoyed by children and adults alike.

Publishing a Greenaway Medal Winner is a triumph for a small publisher like Templar Publishing. Managing Director Amanda Wood said she was delighted and paid tribute to Templar’s Art Director, Mike Jolley. She also said it was a huge privilege for the company to work with the author, Grahame Baker-Smith.

I urge you to read this book!

This book talks about a broken family, war and obsession. Not to mention a dream of flying, which brings me to the reason I do like this book. This book, has two meanings Father as in parent and farther, as in far away. It has so much passion in the writing, for example 'I would sit on his lap until he remembered me. FArTHER not only has passionate words but fantastic illustrations, therefore every time you look at this book you see different things.... Read Full Review
