The Lovereading4Kids comment

Nelson Mandela’s inspirational life story has been adapted into a wonderfully child-friendly version. It tells of his childhood as an ordinary boy in a village and how his belief in democracy was already strongly developed while a student. Mandela’s fight against the government and the oppression that was apartheid, how it led to his imprisonment and how he survived the long, longs days in his cell is a story all should know. Paddy Bouma’s illustrations give a strong sense of the time and place.

Synopsis

Nelson Mandela's Long Walk to Freedom by Nelson Mandela, Chris van Wyk

Nelson Mandela is a true hero of our times, loved and admired across the globe. This book tells the story of his life, from his carefree days as an ordinary village boy, to his unflinching leadership of the ANC, the long years in prison and his eventual freedom and extraordinary elevation to President of South Africa.

About the Author

Nelson Mandela, Chris van Wyk

Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela is a former President of South Africa, the first to be elected in a fully representative democratic election, who held office from 1994–99. Before his presidency, Mandela was an anti-apartheid activist, and the leader of the African National Congress's armed wing Umkhonto we Sizwe. The South African courts convicted him on charges of sabotage, as well as other crimes committed while he led the movement against apartheid. In accordance with his conviction, Mandela served 27 years in prison, spending many of these years on Robben Island. He is currently a celebrated elder statesman who continues to voice his opinion on topical issues. In South Africa he is often known as Madiba, an honorary title adopted by elders of Mandela's clan. The title has come to be synonymous with Nelson Mandela.
