Julia Eccleshare's comment:

Shortlisted for the Roald Dahl Funny Prize 2012.  Love them or loathe then, most babies are sweet. At least, that’s what Mr and Mrs Deer think. They long for a baby of their own to love and cuddle and read aloud to, so, when one is left on their doorstep, they do not hesitate to bring it in. But, although it comes with a label saying that it is sweet, this little baby does nothing but ROAR despite help from all the experienced relatives. And, when those same relatives start disappearing, Mr and Mrs Deer have to ask some serious questions about their new baby. With no happy-ever-after ending this is nonetheless a deliciously entertaining story that takes a fresh look at the arrival of a new baby and the problems it can bring.

Synopsis

The Baby That Roared by Simon Puttock

Mr and Mrs Deer would love a baby, and one day they find a little antlered bundle on the doorstep. Mrs Deer thinks their wish has come true; Mr Deer thinks that the baby is very, very peculiar. When the baby won’t stop roaring, they ask advice from family and friends but it takes wise old Granny Bear to spot the problem: the baby’s not a baby – it’s a little monster. A very greedy little monster at that...
