The Lovereading4Kids comment

November 2012 Book of the Month Machine-mad readers will love this dramatic picture book which brings to life all the action and especially the noise of a building site. Susan Steggall’s brilliantly created 3D collage illustrations of wreckers wrecking and walloping; bulldozers shoving, shifting and shaving and diggers with massive metal mouths tearing the ground, all show how a building site is transformed into new homes. It’s a book that appeals to all senses.

The Diggers are Coming! by Susan Steggall

The diggers are coming! The diggers are coming, with massive metal mouths. Their teeth are tearing at the ground and their tracks trudge round and round and round. Follow all the people and vehicles involved in building a house - from the wreckers coming to clear the ground, through planners, bulldozers, diggers, tippers, mixers, trucks, builders, cranes, rollers and vans, to the people coming to move into the new houses. A lively and colourful new book by Susan Steggall, the successful author-illustrator of Life of a Car, On the Road, Rattle and Rap and Busy Boats, who uses her trademark vivid collage illustrations to bring a busy building site to life for young readers.

About the Author

Susan Steggall

Having initially trained as a graphic designer, SUSAN STEGGALL became a primary school teacher and taught young children for several years. After having her own two boys, she began work in a school library where she enjoyed finding out about new authors and illustrators and selecting beautiful new books for the shelves. As her boys grew up, she started making all sorts of pictures for them of the cars, trucks and trains they found so fascinating. After lots of experiments, the idea of using torn coloured and textured paper evolved. Susan lives in the New Forest in Hampshire.

Her other titles include The Life of a Car, On the Road, Rattle and Rap, Busy Boats and Red Car, Red Bus.
