The Lovereading4Kids comment
How a lovesick puffin finds adventure and cures his loneliness by helping a lost seal pup is a sweet story told in gentle rhyming couplets. Harris the puffin leaves the island he knows and sets off across the wide blue sea. When he finds a seal pup in distress he guides it safely back to its mum on another island. Here Harris finds a warm welcome – just the fresh start he needs. Atmospheric illustrations capture the wonderful seascape home of puffins, seals and the like.

Harris the Hero by Lynne Rickards
Harris the puffin is lonely and at a loose end. He sets out travelling, looking for adventure and meets a lost baby seal. Harris bravely helps his new young companion, but they run into trouble. Then a happy crowd of Scottish sea life pitches in: an eiderduck, a dolphin, otters and some fish. And there are more new friends to come...Lynne Rickards' rollicking rhymes are matched by the verve and character in Gabby Grant's loveable illustrations. Set in Scotland on the Isle of May. From the team who brought you Lewis Clowns Around.
'The book is melodic to read, with lively, colourful pictures. Clearly the author loves the region and has bought the wilds of Scotland to life in the book, aided beautifully by the pictures. It is a happy book with a strong humorous vein. This would be a good 'read aloud'
'The animals are charming and the pathos of the baby seal gives quite an emotional tug. A light airy touch with colour allows the sense of space and fresh sea breezes through.'
'You could spend hours poring over the illustrations alone in this book, as it is full of superb pictures giving us a bird's-eye view of landscapes and stunning shorelines and seascapes. The enormous attention to detail in the portrayal of all the different birds and animals means we have a real feast for the eye here.'
'Written in a lovely rich rhyme, this is a delightful story, with a gentle underpinning message about how, through helping others, we can often help ourselves. Bright colourful illustrations add warmth and gentleness to a lovely tale. This picture book is particularly suitable for reading aloud and sharing together.'
'A sweet picture book, especially for children who love puffins and birds.' --Youth Services Book Review 'Lynne Rickards and Gabby Grant make the concept of helping others fun and palpable for preschoolers and elementary school age children!' --The Reading Castle Blog'
