The Lovereading4Kids comment

A wordless picture book, Journey takes its readers on a magical trip to unexpected places where amazing things can happen. With no one to play with, a little girl draws herself a little doorway out of her bedroom. Pencil in hand, she steps into a beautiful green forest with a river running through it. Now she needs a boat! The girl’s pencil can grant her access to all she dreams of! The result is the creation of a story that celebrates the fulfilment of anyone’s wishes. The beautiful and detailed illustrations are a joy to get lost in.

Synopsis

Journey by Aaron Becker

Follow a girl on an elaborate flight of fancy in a wondrously illustrated, wordless picture book about self-determination - and unexpected friendship. A lonely girl draws a magic door on her bedroom wall and through it escapes into a world where wonder, adventure and danger abound. Red marker pen in hand, she creates a boat, a balloon and a flying carpet which carry her on a spectacular journey...who knows where? When she is captured by a sinister emperor, only an act of tremendous courage and kindness can set her free. Can it also guide her home and to happiness?

In this exquisitely illustrated, wordless book, an ordinary child is launched on an extraordinary, magical journey towards her greatest and most rewarding adventure of all...In time-honoured tradition, a wordless adventure of the imagination.

Reviews

It is an unusually deep and extremely powerful reading experience. An absolute must for all children. * CBI Recommended Reads 2013 * A wordless picture book relating a little girl's adventures as she draws and enters a magic doorway. -- Robert Dunbar * Irish Times * When you don't have words to lean on, the pictures have to work hard and Becker's do: they're original, modern and nostalgic. Worth turning it all off for. -- Alex O'Connell * The Times, Children's Book of the Week * A brief nod to Crockett Johnson's Harold and the Purple Crayon and a wink to Anthony Browne's Bear stories . . . there is so much for anyone and everyone here: adventure, danger, sadness, joy, beauty, wonder, and most important of all, creativity and the imagination . . . All these are so brilliantly encompassed within this amazing story. . . I think this has to be my FAVOURITE EVER wordless picture book. * Red Reading Hub *
