Happy Birthday Winnie by Valerie Thomas

Happy Birthday Winnie by Valerie Thomas

It's Winnie's birthday and she's celebrating in style with a garden party. She uses all sorts of magic to invite the guests and transform her garden into the perfect party venue. There are presents to unwrap and games to play but then things start to go wrong when Winnie toots on the magic trumpet that cousin Cuthbert has given her. All her guests disappear! Winnie's party is suddenly in danger of being a rather bothersome occasion but, true to form, Winnie soon has everything back under control and she ends the party with a stunning edible surprise for all her guests to enjoy.

Paul's artwork is as dynamic and arresting as ever. His comic touch is perfectly judged, stretching the simple story within reach of a wide age group. The Guardian, Amazing Stories Supplement Praise for Winnie's Midnight Dragon: 'Thomas's story is as deliciously fresh and funny as ever, the perfect foil to the drawings.

About the Author

Valerie Thomas

Valerie Thomas was born in Melbourne, Australia, and has lived there for most of her life, apart from six years spent in Europe, where she worked in England, France and Norway. She is a teacher, and has taught in primary, secondary, and special schools in Australia and England as well as lecturing in English Teaching Method in a Teachers' College in Melbourne.

For many years she worked as an educational researcher and curriculum consultant in the area of spelling, and has written extensively on the subject. Her other main interest is travel. She has travelled to most corners of the world, and has written about her travels: the first piece of writing she had published was an account of her experience picking grapes for the champagne harvest in France. She is now trying to organise her life so that she never has to experience another Winter.

In 1987 her phenomenally successful children’s book Winnie the Witch, illustrated by Korky Paul, was published by Oxford University Press and won the Children’s Book of the Year Award. She used to live with a big black cat exactly like Wilbur.
