Synopsis

Teaching About HIV and AIDS in Caribbean Secondary Schools by Sharlene Johnson, Maren Bodenstein, Gisela Winkler

HIV & AIDS and Health & Family Life Education are challenging areas of the curriculum to teach. This book aims to meet the pre-service and in-service needs of secondary teachers, tackling important issues in depth, providing all that the aspiring or busy teacher needs to know. It provides clear accurate background information along with activities to encourage reflection and better practice to aid professional development. Practical suggestions for how to approach the various aspects of HIV and AIDS education and difficult issues in the classroom enable teachers to encourage attitude and behaviour change and prevent the spread of HIV and AIDS. There are sections on: * What every teacher needs to know about HIV and AIDS * Introducing HIV and AIDS lessons at secondary school * Preventing the spread of HIV * Teaching life skills that prevent the spread of HIV * Teaching about sex and sexuality * Teaching about HIV and AIDS across the curriculum * Teaching in a society affected by HIV and AIDS Within each section double-page spread topics contain background information, classroom activities, simple definitions of terms and examples of approaches that other teachers have found effective.
