Science 5-14 Transition Pupils Book by Paul Chambers, Jim Marshall, Nicky Souter, Rae Stark

Science 5-14 Transition Pupils Book by Paul Chambers, Jim Marshall, Nicky Souter, Rae Stark

The Science 5-14 series has been written as an exact match to the science component of the Environmental Studies 5-14 Guidelines. The guidelines have recently been revised, so this is the first and only course to match the latest set. This series of books aims to bring about greater coherence between primary and secondary science, by providing a course which spans the primary-secondary boundary, giving much needed continuity and progression between P7 and S1. Each book covers the three Attainment Outcomes (Living Things and the Processes of Life, Earth in Space, and Energy and Forces), with 20 double page spreads for each AO. Key features include Focussed spreads on developing informed attitudes Focussed spreads aimed at developing investigative skills Key ideas, which provide a summary of the important concepts in each spread Wordbanks which provides concise definition of the key words used in each spread Questions to test knowledge and understanding.

Science books for P7 pupils and money from the Scottish Executive to pay for them - this must be an answer to a prayer. The knowledge and understanding strand is presented in a very accessible way with attractive illustrations which will appeal to this age group. Some chapters in the pupil book are dedicated to investigation skills and help pupils to plan, carry out, evaluate and present their findings. Throughout, attention is given to developing informed attitudes to science. Key ideas, wordbanks and questions end each chapter and could easily provide teachers with the test materials they need. There are many strengths in a publication of this kind. One is certainly the professionalism of the product. The design, colour and quality of the photographs, figures and illustrations make this very appealing. It is good to see Scottish examples (such as Edinburgh Castle on an extinct volcano). Variety is introduced with cartoon-like characters but everything is kept very clear. With these authors, the science content will be perfect... -- TES Scotland 20020301
