Synopsis

Century 5-6 Reader by Sarah Singleton

The Hodder Reading Project Level 5-6 identifies blocks to progression and takes pupils from National Curriculum Level 5 to Level 6. It comprises the Teacher's Resource and the 6 Readers. Reader 1, Level 5, Century by Sarah Singleton. Waking at sun-down and falling asleep at sun-rise, sisters Mercy and Charity are trapped in an eternal winter, every day the same as the last. But one night Mercy wakes to find a single snowdrop on her pillow: a sign of spring, light and other life. An encounter with the mysterious Claudius awakens memories of a happier time and leads Mercy to travel through the four circles of time her father has created to protect his daughters - each circle capturing a significant day in the family's past. As she does so, she weakens the reality of the eternal winter day of her present but it's the only way to reveal the truth of her family's secret and unlock an unpredictable yet hopeful future for her and her sister.

About the Author

Sarah Singleton

Sarah Singleton was born in rural Northamptonshire and holds an honours degree in English Literature and Language from the University of Nottingham. She travelled in Europe, India and Nepal, and worked variously with horses, in a chocolate shop, as a factory operative, and a chambermaid in Germany, before becoming a journalist.

In 1993 she married Brian Hoare, and they have two young daughters. Now, she lives in Chippenham, "in beautiful mystic Wiltshire," and works as a senior reporter for the Wiltshire Gazette & Herald, campaigns with a local human rights group, and is learning to play violin.
