Hensel and Gretel: Ninja Chicks by Corey Rosen Schwartz, Rebecca Gomez

Hensel and Gretel: Ninja Chicks by Corey Rosen Schwartz, Rebecca Gomez

Growing up at the edge of the forest, sisters Hansel and Gretel are no strangers to danger. They've been practicing ninja stealth and karate chops at the local dojo - a move that proves shrewd when their parents are kidnapped by a wily fox. The plucky pair set off on a rescue operation, but the forest is very dark, and their breadcrumb trail doesn't last very long. Then they stumble across a mouth-watering sight: a cottage of cornbread! Danger ensues when they l realise the house is the fox's but her nefarious manoeuvres are no match for the chicks' ninja kicks.

The classic fairy tale gets a fowl-focused, martial-arts makeover in this jaunty picture book Schwartz and Gomez s lively limericks tell the story in a swift, kicky rhythm, while Santat s dynamic, warm-toned, and action-filled illustrations throw a nice nod to kung-fu movies. Booklist
