Synopsis

So Far from the Sea by Eve Bunting

Laura Iwasaki's father was interned along with thousands of other American citizens of Japanese heritage during World War II. When her grandfather died he was buried in the internment camp and now that the family is moving this will probably be their last visit to Grandfather's grave.

Reviews

Bunting's spare prose effectively matches the developmental level of the ages for which this book is geared, and will generate questions that both educators and parents will find difficult to answer. Stark watercolors of the present alternate with black-and-white drawings representing scenes from the past. Together, text and illustrations create and sustain a mood of reflection and reminiscence suited to the topic.
