Synopsis

William Shakespeare by

This highly informative poster features a concise biography of William Shakespeare, as well as a timeline of life and works and a list of his plays in approximate chronological order. A map of Stratford allows children to build a picture of Shakespeare's life, while a list of words such as 'fishified', 'flap-mouthed' and 'maggot-pie' is provided for them to try creating a Shakespearean insult. A diagram of the Globe fills the centre of the poster, and synopses of significant plays are accompanied by artworks inspired by Shakespeare's writing. Information is organised into the topics: Elizabethan theatres; the Globe Theatre, the sonnets, three stages in writing a play; the First Folio; the Royal Shakespeare Company; Shakespeare's language; a typical Elizabethan theatre; the plays; Sir Francis Bacon; different types of play.
