Kate Lums enchanting tale turns the traditional rags-to-riches scenario on its head. Unlike Cinderella, who eventually captures her prince and enjoys a comfortable existence thereafter, her three pampered princesses are so bored with their life of luxury that they decide to become servants for a day. And what a day it turns out to be! Allie, Mellie and Libby sigh longingly for the supposed delights of the milkmaids life 'out in the fresh air, doing interesting things'. Being princesses of course, the servants are at their command, so in no time at all, our royal heroines are off to Mrs Blue, the housekeeper, clad in the milkmaids tatty clothes, ready and eager to start work. Unfortunately they quickly discover that a servants life is not the fun it first appears by the end of the morning they are exhausted. They drag themselves back to the kitchen only to be told by the remorseless Mrs Blue that there is yet more work to do. Quitting, however, is not an option these girls are made of sterner stuff and are determined to see the day out, no matter how much their feet ache. The princesses manage to cope with the harsh realities of life 'below stairs
and gain an insight into the hardships endured by their servants into the bargain. Yet this is far from being a simple morality tale. The princesses are feisty, comical and, above all, modern. This is a fairy tale firmly set in the 21st century, in the tradition of writers such as Babette Cole, and is guaranteed to make the reader laugh out loud. Sue Hellards artful illustrations perfectly complement this lively story
; children will enjoy the almost cartoon-like quality of the drawings, poking gentle fun at the sisters as they totter wearily through their day, but the observant adult will spot many little visual puns such as the upturned fairy being squeezed over a bowl of dirty dishes. This is a delightful story for young children, and one that will find a place in the hearts of many parents as well. (Kirkus UK)
