The book includes first person narratives drawn from diaries, written oral accounts, autobiographies, and interviews and is set against the background of American history. The book begins with a black sailor aboard the Nina with Chritopher Columbus, continues through the colonial period, slavery, the Civil War, Jim Crow, civil rights, to our president in the White House. Includes an index.

About the Author

Linda Tarrant Reid has worked as a freelance journalist, writing on the history of African Americans for the NY Daily News. She has worked as communications specialist for school districts. She is the author of Discovering Black NY: A Guide to the City (Citadel), coeditor of Black Star Power (BET books), contributor to Family of Black America (Crown), and managing editor of The Million Man March (Crown).
