Career Opportunities in Theater and the Performing Arts by Shelly Field

Career Opportunities in Theater and the Performing Arts by Shelly Field

Few careers are considered more difficult than those in the performing arts, but for those who know where to find them the industry offers scores of attainable, well-paying and rewarding jobs. This guide has been written and designed to serve as a useful source of information for anyone wishing to chart a career in the industry - either in front of the footlights or behind the scenes. It covers a total of 70 different careers - from the more traditional sorts of careers such as actor, singer, comedian, dancer, choreographer, producer or director, to the myriad of no less interesting, but often hidden opportunities, including drama coach, sound person, stage manager, casting director, box office treasurer, make-up artist, orchestra manager, usher and music therapist. Each job description consists of two parts: information in chart form and narrative text. The charts provide at-a-glance information on career basics such as duties, title, salary range, employment prospects, training, education and experience prerequisites and a career ladder of future advancement prospects. The narrative text should prove useful for finding additional information about a particular aspect of a job, including information on trade associations and special tips for getting one's foot into the door. This book concludes with a set of appendices locating those places where a job-seeker can find the education and experience needed to land a good position. Appendices include the full names and addresses of college and university degree and non-degree programmes, workshops, internships, trade associations and unions, Broadway, off-Broadway, regional and stock theatres, and orchestra, ballet and opera companies.
