Synopsis

Oscar and the Snail A Book About Things That We Use by Geoff Waring

This book presents a lively introduction to a Key Stage 1 Science topic - materials and their properties. Oscar is a curious kitten and when he finds a nest in the garden made of twigs and moss, he is full of questions about the things that we use. Luckily, Snail is nearby and together they discuss why we choose different materials to do different jobs, where materials come from and the different properties they have. This series has been specially designed with the assistance of education experts CLPE to support Key Stage 1 Science. The perfect starting place for young children to begin learning about how the world around us works. This book is part of an acclaimed series including Oscar and the Bat (9781406304985) and the 2006 NLA WOW! Award-winning Oscar and the Frog (9781406304961) and Oscar and the Moth (9781406304954).

About the Author

As a child, he worried about the big, bad world (Vietnam, the Cold War), but found escape in bird-watching and messing about in ponds. His parents bought him a pre-formed plastic pond for the garden, where he used to feed his pet tench (called Jaws) with woodlice. His parents were actors, so he spent a lot of time in theatres. He always found the models for the sets more exciting than the plays (though not any more!). He drew and painted birds and insects, but then along came girls and punk rock...

Although he draws a lot with pen and pencil, his books are created solely on the computer in Adobe InDesign, a relatively simple design program (Glamour is designed on it too!), which keeps his pictures bold and simple - almost like having scissors and coloured paper to make a collage. He is not a computer whiz, so to have to learn only one program is fine by him.
