The Lovereading4Kids comment

Glorious pop-up spreads reveal the characters at the heart of some of the best loved myths from Egypt, Greece, the frozen Norselands and the mysteries of Asia. A pop-up of the Greek gods and goddesses in their celestial palace at the top of Mount Olympus makes an attractive way of identifying the great characters of Zeus the King and Hera his jealous Queen.

Synopsis

Encyclopedia Mythologica Gods and Heroes by Matthew Reinhart, Robert Sabuda

The divine Encyclopedia Mythologica series grows mightier still, as gods and heroes meet the kings of pop-up. Continuing the thrilling new mythological pop-up trilogy, the masterminds behind the phenomenal Encyclopedia Prehistorica turn their attention to the dazzling and the divine, bringing to life the Gods and Heroes of myth and legend.

This stunning book takes the intrepid reader on a grand pop-up tour of centuries-old myths and legends from across the globe. You can explore the lush banks of the Nile of Ancient Egypt, and visit Zeus' kingdom on Mount Olympus, high above the clouds of Ancient Greece. You can touch down in the frozen lands of the Norse gods; venture to the Far East, where the Jade Emperor rules from the heavens; and on into the wilds of Oceania, where jealous Pele's volcanic rage simmers just below the earth's crust.

About the Author

Matthew Reinhart - As a child

After graduating, Matthew took a year off to work in New York City as, believe it or not, a technician for the Eye Bank for Sight Restoration. He realized he wasn't cut out to be a doctor and, with his heart lying in art, Matthew decided to study industrial design at the prestigious Pratt Institute in New York City.
As an artist

Matthew focused on toy design at the Pratt Institute and before long met up with the prince of pop-ups, Robert Sabuda. "We hit it off," Matthew says of Robert Sabuda. "I began to work with him as an intern during school and learned all about making pop-ups. It's hard, and I never thought it would all sink in, but one day, it did! Now, I'm working on dream projects like Encyclopedia Prehistorica: Dinosaurs and the sequels. I am very thankful for everything I have and everyone who's helped me. Life is good, eh?”

Robert Sabuda - As a child:

Today I work in my studio in New York City, which I share with my partner, children’s book creator Matthew Reinhart. We love making books. It’s hard work, but the best part is not having to worry about making a mess. When being an artist is your job, you can make as many messes as you want to!

1. He loves to read comic books.
2. He doesn’t know how to drive a car.
3. He’ll eat almost anything chocolate.
4. He hates olives.
5. He loves to sleep.
6. He does yoga – poorly.
7. His favourite television show is The Simpsons because it reminds him of his own family.
8. He doesn’t have a favourite colour.
9. Winter is his favourite season.
10. His favourite movie is The Wizard of Oz and he still cries when Toto escapes from the Wicked Witch’s castle.
