Synopsis

A Soldier's Secret The Incredible True Story of Sarah Edmonds, a Civil War Hero by Marissa Moss

This historical fiction novel by bestselling author, Marissa Moss, tells the story of Sarah Emma Edmonds, who masqueraded as a man during the Civil War. The story is told through Sarah's voice, offering readers an in-depth look not only at the Civil War but also at Sarah's journey to self-discovery, as she grapples with living a lie and falling in love with one of her fellow soldiers. Utilising historical materials to build the foundations of the manuscript, Moss crafts a captivating story that effectively balances intense, fast-paced action and emotional content. It includes photographs of Sarah dressed as both a man and a woman, as well as photos of her contemporaries and the battlefields and camps of the Civil War.

About the Author

Marissa Moss has been writing stories and drawing pictures to go with them for as long as she can remember. She sent her first book to publishers when she was nine, and although it wasn’t published, she never gave up the dream of seeing her words and pictures in print. “I loved the power words gave me. If I was mad at my older sister, I would invent someone just like her in my story and make bad things happen to that character. Then, to prove I could be nice, I’d rescue that character and make a happy ending.
