Synopsis

What Darwin Saw The Journey That Changed the World by Rosalyn Schanzer

In 1831 22-year-old Charles Darwin took at job as companion/naturalist to an equally youthful sea captain on a round-the-world surveying journey. For five years he sailed the seas. He had adventures, noticed everything, and wrote it all down. He collected animals and fossils; he experienced earthquakes and volcanoes; he met people of many cultures - and had opinions on them all. And, being the remarkable person that he was, he put his observations (and some reading) together to come up with an explanation for the way life on Earth changes.

About the Author

Charles Darwin (1809-1882) was an English geologist and naturalist. His five year voyage on the Beagle and the popular book he wrote about it made him famous. He introduced the idea of natural selection and showed how the process could allow living things to change gradually to better survive in their changing environments. A variation of his theory is now the excepted explanation for evolution. I think it is safe to say that this author is the only National Geographic author who is buried in Westminster Abbey. Rosalyn Schanzer is the award-winning author and illustrator of 15 books for young people.
