Synopsis

Hurricane Disasters by John Hawkins

Hurricane disasters are terrible occurrences and a source of fear and fascination for many people. They are often devastating and can kill hundreds of people at a time. Many people have lost their lives over the years to hurricanes, and violent storms. Hurricane Disasters first explores what a hurricane is and the set of circumstances that occur in the natural world that create these superstorms. Some famous hurricane disasters are then explored in detail, explaining how, why and when some of the world's biggest and most famous hurricanes occurred. Focussing on famous hurricanes from the 1900s onwards this book explores in depth the terrible and devastating effects of Hurricane Katrina, which destroyed much of New Orleans, Louisiana in 2005. It also looks at other storms such as hurricane Ike that devastated Haiti in 2008 and a terrible storm in 1900 that killed thousands in texas. The factors that contributed to each of these disasters are examined in detail and make for compelling reading. Part of a series of 6 books, Catastrophe! uses historical reports, eyewitness accounts and expert opinions to explore incredible natural and man-made disasters. Suitable for KS2-3 these are excellent reference books for teachers and students.
