A Dozen Cousins by Lori Haskins Houran

A Dozen Cousins by Lori Haskins Houran

This is a rollicking, rhyming picture book with infectious humour. It features a happy heroine who adores her big, boisterous boy family. It is suitable for children aged 4 to 6. What's life like for one little girl with TWELVE male cousins? Not easy! 'They read her secret diary. They used up all her paint. They put a lizard in her hat to see if she would faint'. Loaded with infectious humour, this rollicking, rhyming picture book features a happy heroine who adores her big, boisterous boy family.

Anna s 12 cousins are mischievous young boys who cheerfully target her with their pranks. As the rhyming text reveals, 'Her skirt became a teepee, / her bear, a wrecking ball. / They launched a rocket into space. / The astronaut? Her doll.

? Hardly. Resourceful Anna often sees what s coming next and sometimes even turns the tables on the boys. Short, amusing verses create a narrative structure for the ongoing tomfoolery and ultimate camaraderie in this lively picture book. Ink drawings with color washes portray unflappable Anna and her multicultural group of cousins with energy and warmth. The many close-ups of chaotic horseplay give way to a calmer scene near the end, when the arrival of an ice cream truck brings a welcome truce. A witty picture book that reads aloud well. Booklist
