Creatures of all kind attract children's attention, as will the charming illustrations in this book. The animals are organized by where they live. Children will be amazed that there are so many different types of places. There is Your home, Parks and gardens, Countryside, Farm, Woods and forests, Ponds and rivers, Mountains, Beach, Ocean, Savannah, Rainforest, Desert, Cold regions, Oceania. Clusters of charming illustrations put the animals in groups, such as insects, rodents, fish, birds, small animals and many more. There are separate sections on Animal life: Birth, Babies, Shelter, How they move, What they eat, Attack and defence, Communicate, Sleep, and more. Finally, there is a section on Animal records, Amazing animals, Extraordinary animals, and Camouflage. Throughout the book, the animals are identified by name but also by other characteristics, like body parts, what it eats, and so on. Children not only learn how to identify the animal, they learn a bit about its life and its natural history. My First 1000 Animals is sure to become a favourite. The number and diversity of animals makes for a surprise on each page. It's ideal for bedtime, quiet alone time, learning new words, and talking with someone older about the wonderful world of animals near and far.

Reviews

On the front cover the words, a picture book for toddlers is printed and that is exactly what this book is. It is an oversized book that illustrates 1000 animals and labels them. The book is divided into animals in different environments, the lives of animals and amazing animals. The pages are laminated which makes this a very child friendly book. Children can spend hours looking at common as well as very obscure animals. I especially liked the category of unbelievable outfits that highlighted the unusual markings of some animals... This is a must-have book for any ESL (English as a second language) classroom or school library. Children ages 3-10 will love the book... 5 out of 5.--Sandra Pacheco Youth Services Book Review (12/09/2016)
