The Vikings and All That by Alan Burnett

Synopsis

The Vikings and All That by Alan Burnett

The Vikings and All That is a skull-splitting saga about the wild, seafaring warriors who burst into history in the 8th century and looted, plundered, pillaged and burned their way from their native Scandinavia to the British Isles and much of Europe. Packed with fantastic, fun illustrations of everything from the Vikings' warships to their favourite board games, this is the book that answers all the key questions you might have. If you want sensible answers, packed with historical facts and thoughtful revelations about the Vikings' civilised side then this is the book for you. But if you want boatloads of bearded, shield-biting maniacs bearing down on defenceless, sandal-wearing villagers, then this is DEFINITELY the book for you!

Reviews

'the book romps through 700 years of history, entertaining and educating as it goes. For young readers who like their stories to be gory and gruesome that is ideal. But,beware! It will also shatter some myths and illusions' - The Scotsman, Great Books for Children of All Ages'

About the Author

Alan Burnett

Allan Burnett writes books for children and adults including the acclaimed And All That series of blood-spattered historical biographies; World War 2: Scottish Tales of Adventure based on Allan's first-hand interviews; and Invented In Scotland. He contributes to a number of newspapers and magazines, having worked as a writer, features commissioning editor and deputy foreign editor at The Herald and Sunday Herald group.

Allan was born and brought up in the Western Isles, and educated at the University of Edinburgh. By night working as a caped ghost-tour guide, by day he earned a distinction for his postgraduate thesis on constitutional history and literature. These days he gets dressed up as a rogue medieval courtier or imprisoned U-Boat officer, among other guises, to tell Scottish history tales and create literacy projects with heritage sites and schools. He lives in Glasgow with his wife and daughter.
