Synopsis

Exploration and Discovery by Simon Adams

Read all about the great explorers - Columbus, Cheng Ho, Cabot and Captain Cook. Discover why the Vikings sailed to North America, and which Egyptian Queen led an expedition up the River Nile. This title features specially commissioned maps that show the journeys of some famous adventurers and discoverers. It contains more than 200 commissioned illustrations, drawings and photographs. It includes reference panels containing fact boxes and information, highlighting key dates and events. It is expertly written in a lively and accessible style. The discovery and mapping of the world, its people, oceans and continents, are the result of centuries of exploration. This book traces the history of travel and discovery, and the pioneering travellers who pushed back the frontiers of the known world. It explains the reasons for their journeys, whether out of scientific curiosity, to create trading opportunities, to spread religious beliefs or for personal gain and glory. With the help of a wealth of illustrations, maps and photographs, this book charts the most daring and life-changing journeys of all time, from the first Mediterranean expeditions of 4,000 years ago to the present-day quest for life in outer space. Exploring History is a series of books that takes the reader through time, exploring the reality of what it was like to live in the past. Together the series spans the whole of the human era, from prehistoric times to life in the modern world.
