Inferno by Catherine Doyle

Sophie's life has been turned upside-down, and she's determined to set things right. But Nic, the Falcone brother who represents everything she's trying to forget, won't give up on their love - and it's Luca's knife she clutches for comfort. Soon another mafia clan spoils the fragile peace - and with her heart drawn in one direction and her blood in another, Sophie's in deeper than ever ... Romeo and Juliet meets The Godfather in the second instalment in Catherine Doyle's Blood for Blood series.

About the Author

Catherine Doyle

Catherine Doyle was born in Ireland in 1990. Her debut YA novel, Vendetta, is inspired by Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet and classic Mafia culture. It takes place in modern-day Chicago, where Catherine’s mother grew up.

A Q+A with Catherine

Vendetta is about Sophie, a 16-year-old girl in Chicago, whose life changes dramatically when five brothers move into her neighbourhood. Irresistibly drawn to Nic, Sophie falls into a world governed by criminal dynasties, where she soon discovers the dark secrets in her own family. It’s a story about love and family, revenge and passion, and some very dangerous lies.

I’ve always loved crime movies, like Goodfellas and The Godfather, and the idea that within these dark underworlds there is danger and intrigue but also love, loyalty and honour. My mother grew up in Chicago, a place I’m very fond of, and given its historical connection with some notable mafia figures it seemed like a good setting for this novel.

I have the most fun writing Luca because he is the most self-aware. He says what he thinks and isn’t bothered by other people’s reactions. This means he can be a little snarky, and can get away with saying stuff that the others can’t.
