Synopsis

Churki-Burki book of Rhyme, The by Gita Wolf

Churki and Burki are two sisters who lead a happy, busy life in their village with their family. They spend the day fishing in the river, driving the parrots from the corn field, gathering fruits, and enjoying the outdoors. A recounting of a charmed childhood, The Churki-Burki Book of Rhyme captures the experience of growing up as a girl in a tribal village in central India. Illustrated by Durga Bai - the well-known Gond artist - and with text by Gita Wolf, this evocative book straddles the worlds of memory and imagination. About the Author

Gita Wolf has written more than 14 books for children and adults. Considered one of the most original and creative voices in contemporary Indian publishing, she has pursued her interest in exploring and experimenting with the form of the book and its status as a revered cultural object. Several of her children's books have won major international awards. Durga Bai is a young tribal artist from the Gond tradition of central India. Gond is a ritual and functional art style with distinctive decorative elements, mostly painted on walls of houses, using natural colours. Durga constantly re-works and pushes the borders of the form to create art that sparkles with a distinctive energy.
