A chilling ghost story unfolds fast as the mysterious Lexi’s watch moves steadily backwards and Daniel discovers he must solve the mystery of her terrible wounds before Summer Time ends… Daniel knows he is going to hate everything about his trip to the Leisure World Holiday Complex with his dad. He hates sports and has no intention of doing much more than watching TV. But, when Lexi appears mysteriously on his very first day and then unexpectedly on other occasions, Daniel is drawn into helping her to confront the sinister darkness from her past.
A Review by Katy Poulter, age 12
Daylight Saving is a strange book that is very quick and easy to read. I am absolutely petrified of ghosts so all the way through this book I was looking over my shoulder just to make sure, but it wasn't an ordinary ghost story, it was about a poor soul trapped in a loop, dead yet she could still feel pain and there was a lot of pain to feel due to her horrific death but she could also feel love. It was a love that could never be, for a start, he was alive and she was dead and there was the small detail that every time he got close to her, new wounds opened up on his body and also, nobody else could see her. I enjoyed reading this but I felt something was missing to really engage me as a reader.
Katy Poulter is a member of the Lovereading4kids Reader Review Panel but she has reviewed this novel in the first instance for the Leeds Book Award as it is one of the 2013 shortlisted titles. The organisers have kindly agreed to let us also make use of Katy's review

A review by Katy Poulter This book is nothing like I expected (in a good way)! When I looked at it, I didn't really think I would like it but when I read it, I loved it so much. It’s true what they say; don’t judge a book by its cover. When I was little, I used to think, 'What if this life is just a dream that I can’t wake up from? How can we ever know?' That thought always provoked a long think about life, the universe and everything and I would always try to wake up to see if I was right and never managed it so this book really appealed to me with the situation that Cal was in at the beginning and how if felt so real to him. It wasn't too slow that it was boring or too fast that it was confusing, it was just right and it was gripping. I don’t think Jax deserved what happened to him at the end, I think something miraculous could have happened at that point. I would definitely recommend Cracks to anyone who wants a good, page turner to read.

Amanda Craig on BBC Radio 4’s OPEN BOOK:Recommending dystopian fiction for readers aged 10 to 12, Amanda described Cracks as ‘absolutely wonderful’ and later ‘absolutely fabulous’! She praised its ‘Matrix like premise’ in which 'the boy we think has been living an ordinary, if horrible life, wakes up to find he’s been in a coma for ten years.'

Shortlisted for the 2013 Leeds Book Awards Elinor Nielson, a 19-year-old British army medic, is led into a dangerous intrigue surrounding a mysterious young Afghan girl. What she discovers makes her question everything she believes about love and war.
Barry Cunningham, MD of publisher Chicken House, on Torn:
This thrilling, war-torn drama, told through the eyes of a nineteen-year-old female British army medic, brings to life the war in Afghanistan – and the perils and challenges facing our young soldiers. It’s both moving and fantastically compelling – from the joys of comradeship to the terror of enemy attack and the ultimate victory of love, understanding and compassion. Teenage medic Ellie stumbles upon an apparent military cover-up, and is guided towards the truth by a gang of orphaned Afghan children and a startling girl who seems to appear only in the heat of battle. But it’s Ellie’s growing feelings for a young American officer that makes her understand the importance of her chosen career, as she realises she must put aside her own feelings for something far more important. David Massey’s debut novel is life-affirming. Modern and sympathetic, it will grab the hearts and minds of young adult readers everywhere.
A Review by Katy Poulter, age 12
Torn is a very interesting book which leaves you with a lot of questions that don't necessarily need answering as they spark your imagination and make you think. I knew from the beginning that there was something strange about Aroush and I like the way that the author leaves her character very open to personal interpretation but at the same time I get a really clear yet slightly haunting image of her in my mind. The story was good but the ending was left extremely open so the book wasn't properly resolved. I liked how they all had quirky nicknames like Yugi and Gizmo that showed something about them and made them memorable.

Shortlisted for the 2013 Leeds Book Awards - May 2012 Debut of the Month.
This is a debut novel not to miss. It's an original and haunting psychological thriller that's packed with intense mystery and secrets that will have you gripped from the very first page. It's the story of Kyla whose mind has been erased; every single memory gone, living with a new name with a new family to get a second chance. But is this a second chance or is everyone around her lying ? She thinks so and is determined to prove it. Fans of Sophie McKenzie and Suzanne Collins will love it.
A Review by Katy Poulter, age 12
Slated is a very well thought out book which really makes you think because it depicts a world where if you are young and make a bad decision, they wipe everything you’ve ever known, your family, your friends, everything, rendering you almost a baby. It is a very harsh, paranoid world that is very scared of terrorists and goes to great lengths to prevent terrorism. I really liked how Kyla was so obviously different to other Slateds but she tries, often without success, to suppress this for fear of getting unwanted attention. I also enjoyed the bond between Kyla and Ben and how this is highly discouraged because of what it could do to their ‘levels’. I love the way they try to break free of all the segregation and how they are treated because of something they did but have no chance of remembering which I think is very unfair. I thought the ending was somewhat lacking as it ended unexpectedly, I understand that this could have been to set it up for a sequel, but I think there should have been some closure or something more to the ending as well as it keeping someone interested in a sequel.
