Will works at the big house, and nothing there ever changes very much. But then one day George announces that he's going away to be a soldier in the war that's springing up around them. Will is jealous, but knows he is too young-and too simple-to join him. The glory of war is not for the likes of him. Then soldiers come and take the rest of the men from the house to join the fighting, too. Will is left behind, with the womenfolk, those too old to fight-and the frail, insane Master, of course. Now everything is different, and Will and his friends start to realize that although they have not gone to join the war, they may not be able to stop the war coming to join them. It's time to head for safety-but in a country ravaged by war, where will really be safe? Who will look after them all now the menfolk have all gone away? And how do they know who they can really trust?

He can pass entertaining new laws to annoy teachers, as well. But then there are strange explosions, falling objects, whispered threats. Sebastian realizes the Temple, with its all-seeing golden statue, holds many secrets. Can he ignore it all? James and the Alien Experiment

James and the Alien Experiment

Author: Sally Prue Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 01/08/2005

An engaging, well-written, humorous story about a perennially popular subject. James and the Alien Experiment is a comedy about a boy who is kidnapped by aliens. They're quite well-meaning aliens though, who want to improve his rather useless human body - which proves not to be entirely a bad thing (just mostly a bad thing). Ross is given super-strength, super-brains and super-speed and in the end he succeeds in sorting out his truly loathsome form teacher.

Ryland's Footsteps

Ryland's Footsteps

Author: Sally Prue Format: Paperback / softback Release Date: 04/03/2004

Rye's life changes when his father is appointed as Governor of one of the new penal colonies. With his parents, he moves to the island, where he expects to be the only child among colony officials, prisoners, and offlanders (the native peoples of the region). However there are two other children there: Kris, who is the son of the offlander chief, and Stefanie, daughter of one of the prisoners. The three become uneasy friends, despite their parents' very different agendas: Rye's father is destroying the land through his drive to modernize; Kris's father is desperate to maintain the old ways; Stefanie's father is brewing revolution. With a wide scope and a range of comic and quirky characters, the book has something of the feel of Holes by Louis Sachar, or of the film Oh Brother, Where Art Thou ? It deals with the three children realizing they don't have to follow in their parents' footsteps, and tells the story of how they bring the adults closer together and find a way forward for all the people of the island.
