The Costa Books Awards is the only prize which places children’s books alongside adult books in this way. You can find the four shortlisted children's books in this special section.

The Costa Book Awards is one of the UK's most prestigious and popular literary prizes and recognises some of the most enjoyable books of the year, written by authors based in the UK and Ireland.  Since their launch in 1971, the awards have rewarded a wide range of excellent books and authors across all genres.

On the judging panel for the 2019 Costa Children's Book Awards is:

Charlotte Eyre   Children's Editor, The Bookseller

Bali Rai  Award winning writer of Children's Books

Danny van Emden  Children’s Buyer and Deputy Manager, West End Lane Books

The winner of the Children's Book Category 2018 was The Skylarks' War by Hilary McKay, a moving and engrossing story about a particularly poignant time in history and about the universal concerns of young people growing up. The Judges commented: ‘Chime, resonance and sparkle – a truly great read.’ You can read our review and download an extract here.

The winners of the five categories of the Costa Book Awards - First Novel, Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children’s Book - will be announced on BBC Radio 4's Front Row on Monday 6 January 2020 and each receives a £5,000 prize.
