Asha & the Spirit Bird now goes forward into the competition to win the overall Costa Book Award 2019 which will be announced on 28 January. Winner: Asha & the Spirit Bird

Debut children’s writer Jasbinder Bilan, wins the Costa Children’s Book Award for Asha & the Spirit Bird. Rich in drama, and suffused in the spirituality and atmosphere of the author’s native Northern Punjab; a delightful, hope-bathed treat for 9+ year-olds.

The Costa Books Awards is the only prize which places children’s books alongside adult books in this way.

The Costa Book Awards is one of the UK's most prestigious and popular literary prizes and recognises some of the most enjoyable books of the year, written by authors based in the UK and Ireland.  Since their launch in 1971, the awards have rewarded a wide range of excellent books and authors across all genres.

On the judging panel for the 2019 Costa Children's Book Awards was:

The winner of the Children's Book Category 2018 was The Skylarks' War by Hilary McKay, a moving and engrossing story about a particularly poignant time in history and about the universal concerns of young people growing up. The Judges commented: ‘Chime, resonance and sparkle – a truly great read.’ You can read our review and download an extract here.

The winners of the five categories of the Costa Book Awards - First Novel, Novel, Biography, Poetry and Children’s Book - was announced on BBC Radio 4's Front Row on Monday 6 January 2020 and each received a £5,000 prize. The winners then go forward to compete for the Costa Book of the Year which is presented on Tuesday 28 January 2020 and the overall winner will receive a £30,000 prize.
