September 2019 Non-Fiction Book of the Month

Matt Sewell is a passionate bird spotter as well as gifted artist and his enthusiasm shines through in this sumptuous book. He’s selected favourite birds from around the world, the exotic as well as the everyday, and each one featured is illustrated in his beautiful and expressive watercolour. The passages of text that accompany the illustrations include fascinating facts as well as information on the bird’s appearance and habitat, and some of the facts are really quirky – how the Australian Southern drongo came to provide the slang term for an idiot for example. This is a book to delight, intrigue and inspire as well as inform

A brilliant, very funny, book about birds.

This is a very informative, descriptive book about birds from all over the world. Birds are grouped into the area where they come from. I found it useful that there was a map for each main area and list of the birds to be found there on the opposite page. I thought the book was more interesting than a lot of books on birds because the author/illustrator gives his opinions about all the various birds. The illustrations are very funny.

Some of the birds like the Western barn owl have huge eyes, some look very cute because of their eyes like the Vinous-throated parrotbill. The Black-necked grebe looks a bit evil with his small red ones. Some of the birds looks silly, especially the Ruff, who looks like he has got a coconut on top of his head.... Read Full Review
